Russian fashion market shows growth

part 1part 2

The obvious trend– whetherthe number of magicianshas increased in global networks and decreased in most Russian

Despite the fact that in 2015 and 2016, Russian players actively opened new stores, the number of closed unprofitable stores turned out to be more, which is why most players have negative dynamics in the number of stores. The positive dynamics of brands by the summer of 2017: Sela (+30%), Incity (+11%), Modis (+9%) and Gloria Jeans (+6%).

Most international brands have positive dynamics in terms of the number of stores. The Motivi brand has a negative indicator (16%). The number of Marks&Spencer stores in Russia has not changed (0%).

Despite the stagnation of the retail real estate market, new international brands are coming to Russia

In the first half of 2017, 28 brands opened their first stores on the Russian market (source: "Store of Stores"). During the same period of 2016, 22 global brands opened their first outlets on the Russian market, and in the first half of 2015, only 13.

Almost half of the new retailers of the current year belong to the fashion segment. In 2017, as well as earlier, not a single global network of the mass market segment was released. Most of the discoveries in the segment – are «medium plus» and «premium».

New international brands that have entered the Russian market over the past three years are mainly of Italian origin, and 2017 was no exception: about 50% of new brands in the fashion segment are Italian.

There were significantly fewer departures from the Russian market than, for example, in 2015, when 8 international fashion chains left the market. Since the beginning of 2017, only 2 networks have left the market and 3 more are preparing to close:

  • Takko Fashion, a German chain selling clothing in the mass market segment, has finally closed its stores in Russia, having managed to launch more than 60 outlets since entering the Russian market in 2013.
  • The only wedding fashion store from the American Vera Wang was closed at the beginning of this year. The closure of the Vera Wang monobrand store on Kuznetsky is due to the expiration of the license with a Russian partner. Now the brand will be presented by the Mercury group in a corner format.
  • The British department store chain Debenhams will leave the Russian market for the second time in ten years. Reviva Holdings, a company developing the brand on the local market, has decided to abandon further work with Debenhams in favor of the Finnish Stockmann.
  • The Mexx brand is leaving Russia. Mexx had to close all stores in Russia by July 31, 2017. Mexx was one of the first foreign mid-segment retailers in the Moscow and Russian markets.
  • Accessorize is leaving the Russian market. The last Accessorize store in Moscow, located in the European shopping center, is being prepared for closure.
