Russian cotton

Uzbekistan stops exporting cotton raw materials outside the republic, in connection with which The Ministry of Agriculture of Russia considers it necessary to start production of its own Russian cotton. The project is risky, experts say, and its failure threatens serious consequences for the light and defense industry of the Russian Federation.

"We are ripe. This year, about 1 thousand hectares of cotton will be sown in the Astrakhan and Volgograd regions.

Peter Chekmarev,Director of the Department of Crop Production of the Ministry of Agriculture

The demand of Russian enterprises for cotton fiber is estimated at 68.2 thousand tons in 2018 and 71.1 thousand tons in 2019.

The Russian light industry has historically been focused on the import of Uzbek cotton since the times of the Khiva and Kokand khanates and the Bukhara Emirate. But in recent years, Tashkent has been betting on the maximum volume of processing of its own cotton raw materials and, accordingly, on the export of high-grade cotton products. That's why the export of Uzbek raw materials is falling," explained the president of SOYUZLEGPROm Andrey Razbrodin.

"In three years we will not receive cotton from Uzbekistan: they are actively building processing plants, and they will not sell us a single ton of cotton," commented on this aspectPeter Chekmarev.

The demand of Russian enterprises for cotton fiber is estimated at 64.4 thousand tons in 2017, 68.2 thousand tons in 2018 and 71.1 thousand tons in 2019.
