The fashion industry must be safe: the Fashion Workers Act was passed in New York

The New York State Senate passed the Law on Fashion Workers, this event brought the fashion industry closer to protecting jobs

The Fashion Workers Act is a bill aimed at improving the modeling business environment. His goal is to force management companies to adopt rules to protect models working on freelance contracts. This will help close the legal loophole that currently allows these companies to evade responsibility in terms of pay, health, safety, and protection from discrimination and harassment.

According to the Fashion Workers Act:

  • employees must receive contracts and payment within 45 days;;
  • Workers must be protected from harassment, discrimination and unsafe working conditions;
  • agencies are required to bear fiduciary responsibility to models, hairdressers, content creators, makeup artists and other employees;
  • There should be a ban on any unreasonably high commission fees.

Supporters of the project are confident that this measure will help prevent the abusive attitude of New York agencies, which work uncontrollably in an industry with a turnover of 2.5 trillion dollars, to hired workers.

“We have always had strong support, but this year we are especially proud of the broad coalition that supported the bill,” said Ziff, founder and executive director of the New York—based human rights group The Model Alliance, who is a co-author of the bill.
