Plexus of Sounds opens in Moscow

On December 8, the All-Russian Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts will open an exhibition "Interweaving of sounds". This is a project of Hungarian artist Jeanette Sirmai, which is based on the idea of visual presentation and voicing of national ornaments.

Especially for this exhibition, Ms. Sirmai conducted a thorough study of Russian ornaments from the collection of the All-Russian Museum of Decorative and Applied Art. Extensive and thorough work was carried out with the exhibits from the departments of fabrics, wood and rare books that will be presented at the exhibition.

«The interweaving of sounds» adds another dimension to the perception of traditional embroidery, touching different feelings and inspiring visitors to interact with the exhibits».

Jeanette Sirmai

The Interweaving of Sounds is a project at the intersection of design, media and folk art.Jeanette turns the ornaments of traditional folk embroidery into music. All the ornaments are transferred with the help of a laser to punched cards, which are installed in a music box and acquire a voice. The visual world of the ornament will appear before the viewer in its musical embodiment. The resulting melodies resemble the work of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

The exhibition will last until January 15, 2018.

Curator of the exhibition – Daria Kravchuk.
