According to the Federal Tax Service, sales of fur products have decreased in Russia. For 8 months of this year, sales of fur products in Russia fell by 3% compared to the same period last year to 531.8 thousand products. The number of marked fur products has also decreased to 627.5 thousand (which is 5.6% less than last year).
According to Elena Kadykova, the commercial director of the retailer of leather and fur, the Snow Queen, so far the global trend of abandoning natural fur in favor of artificial fur applies to Russia to a lesser extent than to other states. Interest in products made of natural fur does not decrease, there is no decline in sales in the chain stores. Russians love fur in all its manifestations.
Why is demand declining in general? It is logical to assume that the demand "goes" to some other "more financially accessible to citizens" segments. For example, a representative of the BAON chain, specializing in the sale of winter outerwear, notes that sales of down jackets increased by 46% in January-August 2018 compared to the same period last year.
In August 2016, a project on labeling of fur products was launched in Russia, within the framework of which, in the territories of the Economic Union (Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan), for all participants in the turnover, from the manufacturer to the retailer, it is establishedthe obligation to label all fur products. In July 2017, the Federal Tax Service reported that the legal turnover of fur products in Russia increased fivefold after the launch of the labeling system. The department added that after the launch, more than 1 million labeled fur coats worth 56 billion rubles were sold at retail. It was also previously reported that 25,000 cases of shipments of counterfeit clothing were detected in Russia. Probably, the primary effect of the project went into decline, and the consumer felt its consequences on his own pocket. In the absence of cheap counterfeit products on the market, the cost of products increased.
