"The collections of graduates of BA (Hons) Fashion 2017 are deeply conceptual, experimental and multifaceted. For example, Yulia Ivanov not only offers new methods for creating a capsule collection from materials collected in a refugee camp on the island of Lesbos, but also rethinks fashion, turning it into a social commentary on the search for identity and a form of art therapy at the same time. Other authors reflect on the phenomenon of Russian fashion, referring to Soviet and pre-revolutionary traditions, classics and personal experience. At the same time, they use new technologies and materials, saturating the work with an innovative cut and functional details", "commented the author and curator of BA (Hons) Fashion, Claire Loopman.
About BRANDS AND COLLECTIONS OF THE SHOW
Anastasia Pavlovich. "The future. Forgotten»: The collection is inspired by the idea of self-identification and the search for one's own origins. The project is based on a symbiosis of constructivist ideology and aesthetics with the decorative functionality of a traditional costume. Combining the heritage of different eras and creating them as a whole has become a key element of the collection, reflecting ethnic motifs and quotes from the ornaments of Varvara Stepanova and Lyubov Popova in modern technological materials.
Emilia Tokareva. «Helga»: Russian Russian cultural identity is explored through the prism of two main historical connections that embodied the "Russian spirit": the Nordic Varangian heritage (Iceland with its freedom-loving nature served as inspiration for knitted textures) and the southern Mediterranean roots of Byzantium, which successively multiplied the splendor of the ancient world.
Yulia Ivanov. «EMPATHY»: A collection of clothes for refugees in order to help them regain their individuality. All things can be personalized. The key detail is a specially designed seam, which is created by embroidering words and sentences to choose from. The collection uses only recycled used materials that can be found in the refugee camp.
Ksenia Dorogova. «FLASHBACK»: Inspired by the dark atmosphere of the city, the collection plays up the idea of flashbacks. The black color serves as the main tone and is shown through a gloomy urban silhouette. The inclusions of light refer to the idea of a flashback, when, remembering, a person with the help of imagination relives the whole scene anew, as if it is instantly illuminated by a camera flash. This process reshapes our memory, and we become the embodiment of our own fantasies.
Lina Buxdorf. «The first Aliyah»: Aliyah - mass immigration of Soviet Jews in the 1970s, when the Iron Curtain was first opened in the USSR. The main inspiration was the courage of immigrants who left their homes in search of an unknown future. The collection reveals the subtle connections between the two opposing worlds of Israel and the Soviet Union. The architecture of the Bauhaus intersects with suprematist works, and the national embroidery of the Middle East with traditional Russian cross-stitch.
Nina Veresova. «-olog»: The principles of evolution and taxonomy as tools for understanding the feelings and emotions of other people became the basis for building the collection. Using computer programming, the principles of evolution and DNA, the author programmed her own creatures from various parts of nature in unexpected combinations. The collection is a bestiary of fictional creatures that reflects the inner world of a scientist and an artist at the same time.
Teimina Poghosyan. "Loneliness": The collection is a means of self-expression and an attempt to learn, love and accept the phenomenon of loneliness. The goal is not only to create surfaces, but also to transform them into feelings. The collection is inspired by the works of Soviet film director Andrei Tarkovsky. Custom-made jacquard mixed with linen, wool, worn leather, felting and felt technique, latex, wool and velvet are used to express emotional intensity. Abstract cut and deconstructive complex products support and enrich the surreal atmosphere of the collection.
Ulyana Nekrasova. «Art therapy»: The collection explores instinctive drawings and shapes using the body as a canvas, allowing the senses to decide the directions of the lines, creating a form through movement on paper or in space. Drawing helps to abstract from problems and overcome stress. The project explores the reflection of emotional vibrations such as stress, depression, euphoria, happiness, hysteria, harmony and balance. This is a story about how a person through art can develop peace of mind or overcome a stressful emotional state, gaining awareness.
Zlata Belokobylskaya. «Hypoxia»: The experience of a person going beyond his conditioning is unique. Collection «Hypoxia» This is an attempt to convey the incomparable freedom of a person who has lost the shackles of the familiar world and is forced to pay a high price for it, sometimes with his own life. Oxygen starvation is a condition awaiting every high-altitude climber, and the key to comprehending unknown heights of perception.
